What external action reveals

The proposal is sent and the answer is no. The first product release attracts two buyers, not twenty. A manuscript is submitted and then rejected. Each response gives the maker information that private preparation could not provide. Consequential Progress follows the event that made the response possible and what happened next.

The measure records the number and timing of consequential thresholds reached over an interval. A threshold puts appropriately selected work into a setting where an external response becomes possible. The response has its own timing and meaning. A useful distinction is between crossing the boundary and winning the result hoped for on the other side. One event is largely about whether the work entered the world; the other depends on the audience, timing, competition, quality, and circumstances the maker cannot command.

In a hypothetical case, a designer presents a finished concept to a client who chooses another firm. The presentation and the client's decision are two distinct events. Recording both shows that the work reached the intended decision maker and that this opportunity closed. The designer now has a specific result to consider when deciding what to change or where to take the work next.

Target selection gives the event its significance. The framework follows work directed toward an appropriate audience and a result that matters to the person. Recording the target, the handoff, and the response together helps distinguish a useful outside test from activity that leaves the intended goal untouched.

Research on goal disengagement and reengagement shows that leaving an unattainable goal can be adaptive. Consequential Progress makes the history of pursuit visible. The outside response can inform a revision, another test, a different target, or a decision to finish with that goal. Each choice begins with a clearer account of what the work has reached.
